Standards

  1. The candidate has deep knowledge of current and emerging state initiatives and programs including, but not limited to, the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI); the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI); Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX); Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide (ACCESS); and RTI (Response to Instruction) and their relationship to student achievement.

At Helena Middle School, we are striving to incorporate literacy into Physical Education by having the students talking more about the material that we cover. Quick formative assessments such as bell ringers and exit slips lead to more conversation on health and fitness or on the sport we are covering. This is to help scores in other areas as well.

2. The candidate understands how content and skill development can be supported by media and technology and knows how to evaluate these resources for quality, accuracy, and effectiveness.

There are many great resources to use in the classroom, technology wise, we mainly use a projector and a Chromebook to show videos to students of how a game or activity is played. For this specific lesson, we used a projector and Chromebook for that exact reason. We showed a video that demonstrated how to properly play the game of volleyball and a few fundamentals. We use YouTube to find school appropriate videos that go over the games' rules.

3. The candidate dedicates time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.

We have a 4-teacher team at our school, and we collaborate with each other on ideas and activities our students can do. We constantly ask our kids for feedback on what are some skills thy would like to improve on. For this particular lesson, we asked if they preferred to be a passer or setter. We came up with ways for our students to end up in those positions they enjoyed but also challenged them to do the things they may not feel as comfortable doing.

4. The candidate continually improves his or her practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning.

Since I am a first-year teacher, I am constantly learning from those around me that have been doing this for much longer than I have. They have been integrating technology into PE as much as possible due to it being more hands-on learning than watching.

5. The candidate seeks out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.

I have a great mentor and principal for my first-year teaching, and I am constantly asking them question on how I can better myself for the betterment of the students. We have gone over multiple ways to manage a large group of students and make our learning environment in the gym safe at all times.
